About the Author 作者简介

Michael Grosberg:

After a childhood spent stateside in the Washington DC area, mostly because of his father's unanalyzed fear of flight (which restricted family trips to small train compartments or cramped cars - both fertile territory for close-hand combat with his brother), Michael spent a year studying and traveling in Israel. His world now open to other shores and the pleasures of international flight, especially the meals (always fish or chicken, never beef), Michael continued to travel.

After college, and with a valuable philosophy degree in hand, he took a job vaguely related to developing a resort on the island of Rota in the Northern Marianas. Guam, Saipan and Tinian were not enough to ease his travel fever, so he left for a long overland trip through Asia that ended in semi-disaster - if judged by the fact that his things were being hauled around in his laundry bag when he arrived in Amman, Jordan.

An aborted attempt at graduate school was followed by an exploration of the country of his birth, the USA, driving a beat-up truck full of books. Cliches piling up like tacky roadside museums in the western part of the country, Michael decided to try his hand at the classic romantic gig, working in a fishery in Alaska, only to be told on arrival that he was too early.

He found his way to South Africa, where he investigated and wrote about political violence and other fun issues and then helped train newly elected local government officials. But, feeling the call of New York City, he went to graduate school in comparative literature, received a Masters but stopped just short of the coveted doctorate (he realized he wasn't willing to move to Kansas for a job) before teaching literature and writing as an adjunct professor at several NYC colleges.

Michael has worked on over 45 Lonely Planet books. His most memorable so far is easily the Myanmar book, though each experience has both added to his rich and complicated psyche and also taken years from his young life.

Kevin Raub:

Kevin Raub is a Portugal-based travel and entertainment journalist and certified Brazilianist who grew up in Atlanta and started his career in entertainment in New York, working for Men's Journal and Rolling Stone magazines and "freelancing" (i.e. interviewing hot young actresses about their sex lives over a few too many cocktails) for men's magazines like FHM, Stuff and Maxim. He spent five years in Los Angeles as the senior writer for allstarnews.com, CDNOW's now-defunct  groundbreaking online music news site.

The rock 'n' roll lifestyle took its toll, so he needed an extended vacation and took up travel writing. Raub now contributes to a variety of publications including Travel+Leisure, New York Times T Travel, Robb Report, Town & Country, American Way, Rhapsody, Private Clubs, Continental, New York Post, and Organic Spa (www.organicspamagazine.com), where he pens a bi-monthly organic grooming column for men, The Green Guy's Grooming Guide.

Raub spent seven years on Brazilian soil, canvassing the South American Giant one caipirinha at a time on his way to getting to know 22 Brazilian states for a variety of American and international publications. A well-known Brazil expert, he also handled all of Lonely Planet's on-the-ground social media coverage during the FIFA 2014 World Cup before relocating to Portugal the following year.

Raub is the co-author of numerous Lonely Planet travel guides, including Brazil (7th Ed.; 2008), Mexico (11th Ed.; 2008); Chile & Easter Island (8th Ed.; 2009), The Carolinas, Georgia & The South: Trips (1st Ed.; 2009); Colombia (5th Ed.; 2009), Lonely Planet's Best In Travel 2010 (2nd Revised Edition, 2009); South America on a Shoestring (11th Ed.; 2010); Venezuela (6th Ed.; 2010), Central America on a Shoestring (7th Ed.; 2010), Brazil (8th Ed.; 2010); India (14th Ed.; 2011), South India & Kerala (6th Ed.; 2011), Discover India (1st Ed.; 2011); Dominican Republic & Haiti (5th Ed.; 2011), Caribbean Islands (6th Ed.; 2011), USA (7th Ed.; 2011), Eastern USA (1st Ed.; 2011), Discover USA (1st Ed.; 2011), Colombia (6th Ed., 2012), Chile & Easter Island (9th Ed., 2012), Peru (8th Ed., 2013), South America on a Shoestring (12th Ed., 2013), Discover Peru (2nd Ed., 2013), India (15th Ed., 2013), Discover India (2nd Ed., 2013 and Brazil (9th Ed., 2013); and the forthcoming Dominican Republic (6th Ed., 2014), Discover Caribbean Islands (1st. On the few days he's home, Raub once spent an inordinate amount of time slathering on organic cosmetics for his bi-monthly organic grooming column for men, The Green Guy's Grooming Guide, which appeared in Organic Spa for several years, but constant battles with the Brazilian food and drug administration caused it to meet its demise in 2011. Now, he just slathers it on for fun.

Raub also scoured Brazilian soil as the 'Brazil Insider' for LAN and TAM airlines' Only in South America blog (www.lan.com/onlyinsouthamerica/blog) for a few years as well.

Raub continues pounding the world's pavements with one goal in mind: Membership in the Traveler's Century Club before the age of 50. His country count currently stands at 83.

What you would expect from Lonely Planet a good basic guide to all the well known places in the D R.

This is the latest version and updated in October 2014 and the only disappointment for me with the book, which is why I lack a bit of confidence in it, was that the Chikungunya virus didn't get a single mention in the health and safety part of the guide. This is THE biggest health and safety story in the country over the last year or so. The virus arrived in the DR in December 2013. So either the authors haven't been here as recently as they claim or they didn't talk to any Dominicans when they were here.

Useful guide. I reviewed the information with native dominicans,  they found it accurate and precise.

Lonely Planet always pull through.  Can't imagine my travels to DR without this book.  Up-to-date (I traveled in early 2016) and relevant information.  We were able to plan our trip with ease using this book, and referred to it time and time again for restaurant ideas, transportation info, and excursions.

Easy to read and small enough to take on vacation with me when I went to the DR.  Gives a great overview of all the hot spots throughout the DR.  I went to the local book store and found that this book has the BEST overall description of the country!

LP never lets me down, and this is no exception! Has great suggestions from cheap to classy/expensive. They made it easy to plan my trip and provided the material in a non bulky form. I won't ever use another travel guide again.
